Visit the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas in 10 steps

San Salvador in the Bahamas is one of the sublime and still secret paradise islands of the archipelago. We will make you discover it in a 10-step tour of the island and give you a dream address where to sleep. It is in this hypnotic setting that Christopher Columbus landed in 1492 during his conquest of the New World. It is also the first step of our travel itinerary to the Bahamas. We propose you to discover this unique dream destination in this new post of our travel blog simplelive.us through our stories, photos, video and practical advice.

We had the chance to discover this open-air aquarium that makes all the island, kitesurfing and diving lovers dream (3rd most popular diving spot in the world) last March. But San Salvador also has a rich history.

San Salvador is indeed the first island of the Bahamas archipelago that one meets when crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Regularly swept by the winds, the island is covered with a thick vegetation typical of the bushes. The interior of the inaccessible island is also composed of salt lakes. On the coasts, it is Nature in all its splendor between dream beaches and lagoons with 50 shades of blue like the one of Pigeon Creek that we explored by kayak.

San Salvador is a destination favored today by kitesurfers and divers, but also by those who want to enjoy the sun while relaxing.

The island of San Salvador is 10 km from east to west and 18 km from north to south. Only 1,200 people live on the island, divided into 9 communities. Among the population there are some families that are descendants of the planters and their slaves. They represent the oldest families of the Bahamas archipelago. A real memory!

The island of San Salvador is also home to some relics from the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the ruins of the pirate's lair John Watling. The Dixon Lighthouse, built in the 19th century, offers a sublime 360-degree view of the eastern part of the island from its summit.

The tour of the island can be done very quietly in one day. If you decide to take advantage of the swimming spots, the tour can obviously be longer and spread over several days. Renting a car costs 60 dollars a day. For the scooter: 60 dollars for 4 hours then 20 dollars per hour. You might as well rent a car ^^ Don't hesitate to manage this directly with the resort.

1. Visit San Salvador in the Bahamas: The ruins of John Watling's castle

It is from the east of the island that we embark by car. After 20 minutes on an unpaved road from our resort, we arrived in the south of San Salvador and more particularly at the foot of a very small hill which shelters on its top the ruins of the Watling castle dating from the 1600s. Yesterday, John Watling was synonymous with pirates. Today John Watling's has become a brand of rum and we even visited the distillery in Nassau. We'll tell you more about it soon in our article on the capital of the Bahamas.
