We chose to visit Montreal for the first time in October 2016 during the GoMedia tourism trade event, an annual event organized by Destination Canada. Part of our stay was therefore spent in the presence of other bloggers and journalists from around the world.

It was an opportunity for us to discover the must-see sites in Montreal. We then prolonged our stay in Montreal on a personal basis to live Montreal at our own pace and to familiarize ourselves more with the different neighborhoods of the city and to practice some activities such as bicycle touring to visit Montreal differently.

We then left for a 15 days road trip in Quebec to explore the great spaces of the magnificent province of Canada. We speak to you about it at length in a series of articles published on our travel blog.

Here are our tips and tricks to help you organize your next trip and visit Montreal for the first time, a cultural metropolis at the convergence of Europe and the United States of America. A diversity that is expressed in its architecture, its gastronomy, and the friendliness of Montrealers.

1. When and how to visit Montreal?

1.1. Why visit Montreal?

Montreal celebrated its 375th anniversary in 2017 and Canada its 150th anniversary. It is the city to visit since the whole city is always animated with festivities all year long. 800 performances and street shows were presented that year in all parts of the city in July. Food trucks and music will of course be part of the event as every year from June.

Celebrations and festivities are still everywhere in Montreal. We can already advise you to go and visit the Jacques Cartier Bridge which is sublimated by 2807 projectors since May 17, 2017 which was the anniversary of the 375th anniversary of Montreal.

A bridge completely redesigned visually by Moment Factory, a company that we had the chance to visit and that creates and designs experiences that give strong sensations, surprise and amaze audiences around the world.

Don't miss the unique event of "Montreal en Lumière" which will be reminiscent of the one in Lyon, France. The Giants will also walk through the streets of the city. This is not without reminding us of the machines of Nantes. Let's not forget to mention the Cité Mémoire which makes the History of democracy alive and accessible since May 18, 2017 to the greatest number through a night geocaching in the middle of the city. We'll stop here because 175 events were held for this 375th anniversary of Montreal.

1.2 When to visit Montreal for the first time?

You can visit Montreal all year round, but for a unique experience, prefer the good weather. The ideal season to visit Montreal for the first time is from April to October.

In the summer, festivals animate the city and temperatures can reach 30 degrees.

In the fall, the beautiful colors prevail especially in the Mount Royal Park but not only. If you have the chance like us to visit Montreal during the Indian summer, the atmosphere is just incredible.

In the winter, the temperatures in Montreal can be freezing and the city is regularly covered in a thick blanket of snow. Montreal life then migrates in part to the labyrinthine basements. This is the season when we like to take refuge in the warmth of a café between two visits. Perfect for soaking up the Montreal culture and lifestyle and for cold weather lovers, we admit it.

No matter what season you visit Montreal for the first time, you will always find something to do in the city. Like us, you can also decide to go on a road trip in the province of Quebec or just go for a few days in the surrounding regions like the Laurentians or the Eastern Townships. You can find our adventures by clicking on the blue links. In the fall, the Eastern Townships is the ideal region to observe the beautiful colors of the maple forests.
